Cycling

Mountain biking at Nevis Range. Image courtesy of Nevis Range The Glen Spean and Great Glen area offers probably the best biking facilities and trails in the UK. The challenging Downhill track at Nevis Range has hosted UCI Mountain Bike World Cup events in recent years and was the venue for the World Championships in 2007. Cross country enthusiasts are also well served by the stunning high level Red Route on Aonach Mor (accessible by the mountain gondola). There are also over 48 km of off road trails around Leanachan Forest - from easy, family tracks to single track cross country routes, like the Witch's Trails. Bike and equipment hire is available at Nevis Range and Fort William.

Gondola on Aonach Mor. Image courtesy of Nevis RangeThe mountain experience for all seasons! Britain's only mountain gondola carries visitors up to 2150ft on Aonach Mor, beside Ben Nevis. The journey takes 15 minutes each way, and is suitable for all age groups and most wheelchair users. There are two marked trails to viewpoints from where you can see the hills of Knoydart, Ardgour and Moidart.  Skiers and snowboarders hit the slopes in winter, whilst climbers make use of the ride to reach winter routes. 25 miles of forest tracks are there to explore on foot or by bike. Lessons and equipment hire are available.  Snowgoose restaurant & bar at the top gondola station serves hot meals and snacks. Base station Café and T-huts on the slopes offer warming drinks & snacks.

Mountaineering and Munro Bagging

The higher peaks can provide challenges for even the most experienced mountaineer, the soaring ridges of Ben Nevis being some of the most exhilarating expeditions in the British Isles. There's rock climbing too, both high and low level, abseiling, gorge walking and a host of other mountaincraft related activities. Whatever the weather, whatever the season, the hills, mountain and glens of Lochaber offer a peace and tranquillity that is rare in the modern world - a timeless place with time for you.

This area is a great base for paddlers as it has the greatest concentration of kayaking and canoeing in the region, at a wide range of levels of difficulty, from sheltered flat water on the Caledonian Canal to technical white water gorges and creeks. In addition Loch Arkaig and Loch Lochy offer good inland touring potential with a bothy and islands to explore on the former.

Golf

The Spean Bridge golf course (9 hole, Par 34, Length 2271 yards) has a very traditional Scottish, woodland layout. The natural features of the land have been incorporated into the course so that it makes for an interesting and challenging experience. It lies on the south side of the West Highland railway line, the clubhouse opposite the station. Visitors are always made very welcome!

Sailing

Sailing on Loch NessFrom the sea at Fort William, the Caledonian Canal connects Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and Loch Ness and these lochs offer an inland passage for yachts and pleasure cruises from the Atlantic to the North Sea.  Loch Oich is ideal for learning to sail while Loch Lochy, which can be quite exposed, is more suitable for experienced dinghy and windsurfer sailors.
